WORKING LIFE IS HELL FUN! Screw what others say about how shitty it is to work.
Trust me, when you start, then you'll feel that all the hard work in vet sch was worth it.
Seriously, how can anyone say life as a student is so much better than working life?

Baby Steps.

Into the working world. Unfortunately, the harsh reality starts to weigh on my shoulders and I start to realise that baby steps just won't do the job. You need to be brave, be confident and have faith to walk the treacherous path knowing that any moment you may just fall. You can count your lucky stars if you escape with a superficial scrape or bruise. Well, at least I know the path is always lighted, and that's a huge comfort to me.

It doesn't have to be easy and I was mentally prepared. Physically, not so.. but that's expected and will take some getting used to. No matter how tired I feel at the end of each day, I always go to bed reminding myself of my initial fire and passion for wanting to do this. So no matter what happens, I will grit my teeth, persevere and continue walking forward.

You can throw me into the deep end, that's okay cos I'm a good swimmer! You can let go of my hand, that's okay too.. cos I know that I need to learn independence someday. The first 6 months will be the hardest right? 1 down, 5 to go! I'll survive.. or rather, I'm confident I'll do better than just surviving. I will finish and accomplish what I set out to do.

Apologies for not blogging lately. I've been trying to adjust my lifestyle and body to
working.Super not used to waking up early and the long hours at work. My boss
says I need to learn how to manage my time. I think that will require a few months

Twenty.Ten

So I spent New Years Eve with a bunch of friends. And we played this game called Saboteur. And oh my goodness. I was surprised at how intellectually challenged I was at playing this game. It looked pretty easy but there I was totally lost in the game. Forget about differentiating who the good/bad people were, I couldn't even figure which way to place the cards to build roads. And I ended up blocking the people in my team. I win- the most retarded award of the night. Yay.

Now, talk about New Years resolutions.. I haven't actually given much thought into it.
I'll get back to this topic later in the week.

To the most exciting part of this post: I AM STARTING WORK TOMORROW!!

5 years worth of work and it all boils down to 2 papers in 6 hours.
Whee! I'm so happy, so so so so so so so happy! Heh you know,
I haven't been this happy in a very long time?
The papers weren't the easiest, especially yesterday's. But who cares, its over!
I don't need to think about it until results are out in about 2 weeks time.
Anyway I think as long as I don't receive an email telling me
that I've gotta do a sub in about 10 days time, I should be safe :)

Today's paper was one of the longest and toughest papers ever.
120 MCQ in 3 hours. By the time I got to 60, my neck was aching,
my ass was hurting and my head was throbbing.
It was very mentally challenging to stay focus and keep pushing on page after page.
I'm sooo glad its all over now. You know my attention span is like half an hour.
3 hour papers almost always drain the life out of me.

It's time to start packing!

I feel so exhausted but I'm just not sleeping well at nights.
I toss and turn for more than an hour and I just can't get to sleep.

Right now, its 3 minutes to 4am and I am still in school.
With a busting bladder and squinty eyes, I am calling it a night.
I was getting all demoralised and upset just now that I may not be able
to finish Equine by tmrw. Then suddenly my brain woke up, I kept clenching
my fists, telling myself to persevere, persevere.. And then, I found myself
flying thru the book like anything! Haha.. 13 chapters, 480 pages.
I finished 10 chapters! So only 3 to go tmrw, and the prac notes.. :)

I am a happy child right now.

I think I should reward myself by sleeping a full 8 hours tonight..
or rather, this morning. Haha.

Ugly Singaporeans

*pui* You disgrace our country. Some Singaporeans just don't know how to say thank you. I was at T3 again today, and while taking the lift, I came across these bunch of mixed mature-aged adults + some kiddos who were I tell you, rude like hell. Because I was standing near the buttons, I held the lift open for them to come in. They just rush in like some nomadic herd without saying thanks. Nevermind. We were all getting off at the same level so once again I held the button and waited for everyone to leave and STILL no one said thanks. Except you know who? Except these 2 South African tourists who whispered a soft thank you and flashed a tiny smile at me. YOU'RE WELCOME you bloody rude-ass Singaporeans. I was so mad I let out a F**K when I got out of the lift. Do I look like a butler to you? For crying out loud, its so embarrassing to other tourists when they see how impolite you people are. Fancy holding your kids hands and behaving this way. Is that how you teach your kids? Gosh their behaviour is totally shocking.

Nevermind. Then this man who rushes into the lift tramples on my feet (I was wearing open-toed birkies) and instead of saying sorry, he went "Tsk!" and shot me this dirty look. EXCUSE ME, YOU TSK WHAT SHIT. NOW IS YOU STEP ON ME OR I STEP ON YOU?! I wanted to slap this guy I tell you. So ungentlemanly still so arrogant. I hold the lift door open for you, let you step on my feet and you still TSK ME?! You are bloody lucky I wasn't holding a scalpel blade or I'd have exanguinated you there and then. Still dare to stare at me.. the moment I said YOU TSK WHAT, you immediately turn away and pretend I'm talking to air. So ball-less still wanna tsk people and act all suave and macho.. Don't make me pui at you please. Try and intimidate me.. sorry buddy, you picked the wrong person.

To think all these happened in the Changi Airport where we welcome tourists to our country. I sure hope the majority of tourists don't get to meet these ugly Singaporeans. Such a bad image to a great country.

A particular component caught my attention; Communication Skills/ Teamwork: 6/10.

Ever get this moment where you read something and its actually not all that funny but you just keep laughing to yourself? I was reading this person's blog, and I couldn't stop giggling to myself. Let me explain myself.

See right. The blogger doesn't have a good command of english himself/herself. (Everyone who knows him/her well enough knows this) But yet he/she writes such flowery posts that make people go ???. I remember a mutual friend once telling me "Eh that XXX trying to show off that his/her English is damn good is it. Does he/she get someone to edit his/her blog or what? What is he/she trying to show man.." Now that was mean. I would never say something like that.

But as I was going through post after post, it started to amuse me more and more. Firstly, the person never speaks like this in real life. Secondly, it was obvious he/she was trying to put himself/herself across as a person who is fluent in English. Thirdly, its so fake esp if you know the person personally. And last but not least, its erm.. abittttt trying to hard don't you think?

And the best part of it all, there are grammar mistakes in almost every 2nd sentence I read- sometimes 2-3 in one sentence. And I wasn't even trying hard to spot mistakes. Haha. Ok now I do sound mean. But its true! Okay my English isn't that powerful I admit but at least I got A1 and A2 for O' and A'levels respectively right!- which isn't a good indicator of a person's English standard but ayy you get my point!

I'm not sure why, but I believe people set up blogs so that they can find a place where they can write freely, be themselves and share some stories with people out there. With all due respect, I'm not here to criticise that particular blogger or make fun of his/her English. I just find it funny- honestly. Haha.

This is my personal opinion. I feel the blogger lacks self-esteem but has too much personal ego to go through the extent of trying to portray himself/herself as someone totally different from the true person itself. Have a little more faith in yourself. You are who you are, your friends will accept you for who you are. You don't need to blog like a diplomat, CNN reporter or politician.

Pride comes before a fall.

I hate kids with a Vengeance (yeah with caps).

There I am trying to study in T3 and there's this Indian kid screaming her head
off for god knows what reason. And her mum? Just 3 feet away from her does
nothing but smile. Hello? Irritating? Annoying? Shut up maybe? Arghhh!
How can her mum be amused at her misbehaviour? It's appalling.

Ok so how did I end up in Changi Airport T3 studying when I live next to Tuas?
Well thats because I couldn't think of a place where I could avoid crowds yet be
able to see something other than shelves of books (National Library) for me to
sit down, sip coffee and do some studying.

I kinda like it at T3. (Minus the wailing kid bit). Just that parking is a weee bit ex.
$9 bucks for 5+ hours. But worth it, I avoided the usual Singapore crowds I see
everywhere I go now. My claustrophobia is becoming worse now that I'm back.

Oh oh, and while I was there, I saw quite a few JC students studying for A levels.
(I presume). And I told my mum I'd rather study for my final exams than have to
go through A levels again. Haha. At least what I'm studying is interesting.
Seeing them go thru' TYS (yes, such an ancient word to many of us now), question
after question, furiously punching down figures in their calculators, scribbling greek
words all over their papers.. Poor things.. I really felt sorry for them.
I'm glad those nightmarish days are long gone for me.

And then! I spotted two ACJC female students. And I told my mum "Eeyer Ma,
standard drop so much man." Haha. Ok very mean I know.. but its true!
Don't believe you go T3 and see for yourself :P

Woohoo! I'm running the very last leg of the race now. With just 3 weeks to go,
I must focus, focus, focus and give it all that I've got for the final exams. Jia you!!

Since coming back, many people have been asking me many questions.
Mainly with regards to do with finding a job.. Why ah.
I scratch my head and wonder why they seem more concerned than I do.
Either they are genuinely concerned, or they are just nosy/competitive.
Let me answer them to see if I can avoid repeating myself over and over again.

Yes I am, probably for good. I wanted to work overseas but its not possible now.

Tentatively December 2nd 2009.

Yes. I officially applied to 2 clinics that I'm more familiar with.

Yes and no. Got a reply from 1. Waiting for a reply from the other.

And the vet team was trying to tube him to give him some Ivermec.
Yes, it takes FIVE adults to uncurl him and restrain him properly.

The aftermath. I don't think Crash liked the liquid very much.
Oh they had to microchip him too. Brave Crash didn't even scream :)

My Heng Heng and Charcoal has TICKS!
They're 8 & 7 years old respectively, and they've NEVER had ticks before..
Must be the bloody pet shop where they go for their weekly baths/grooming.
I won't name it just in case they decide to sue me for slander, but its a pretty famous one.
No way am I sending my dogs back there. Not a fat chance. I'm so mad..
No wonder my Heng Heng keeps chewing her paws.. Poor thing. Stupid pet shop..

It's fine being fickle-minded if you're still contemplating on what to do..
But its a totally different story if you've made your decision after much thought,
then make a 360 degree change to your decision with no warning..
I don't even call that fickle. That's just plain having holes in your brain.

I had a whiff of some guy's cologne today as he walked past me..
It smelt so familiar I turned around and almost chased after him..
Yet after I realised who it reminded me of, I wished I never recognised the smell..

I was feeling rather glum today. 1. The cologne. 2. The smses.
Why. Why do people raise your hopes high only to disappoint you at the end of it..

Oh for god's sake why can't you people just make up your minds.
You idiots just don't realise the consequences of your actions and the impact

My 5th Day at the Zoo!

Meet Buddy- the red shoulder Macaw!
He loves his critical care + electrolytes drink every morning :)

This is a Black Tufted Marmoset.
One of the many species of the New World Monkeys.

A magnificant looking (but sickly) Green Iguana.

Ever seen an Iguana swimming? Haha.. my first time too!
And that's Dr. Abraham, the new senior vet in the Zoo.. He's so nice :)

This is a Greater Mousedeer who had a maxillary sinus infection that
was not getting better so they decided to place a sub-palpebral lavage
(yes! like horses!) so they could drain his eye daily with saline.

Apparently they never let people get this close to them cos' they very flighty.
But this one's very tame so lucky me, I got to take a photo with it!

My legs ache like mad. And I'm so sleepy.
My papa says I cannot celebrate my birthday this year :(
(even though I'll be in Singapore) So sad..

And he refuses to let me drive the Lexus. Ggrrr..
Fathers... They never listen.

My 4th Day at the Zoo!

This is a 4 day old baby Pygmy Loris!
Looks like ET right? Haha..

He/she was rejected by mum and is now being hand raised!
We use a catheter to feed him milk + yoghurt every hour..
Soooo cuteee!

This is a Douc Langur. i.e a monkey.
She's a grandma who wasn't doing well after being moved..
so she had to be anaesthetised for a full check up and fluids.
That's my finger she's grasping onto. Amazing hands & feet they have.
No wonder they said human evolved from apes.

Heh, look what I found! A Z'bar! So lame..
Haha but it looks great don't you think? Pity the location's abit hidden.

My 3rd Day at the Zoo~
It was pouring half the day, so didn't get to do much.

A very tame Spotted Hyena named Zul.
Look at her puppy eyes, looks exactly like my Charcoal Boy :)

It was pouring and the Zebra was getting kinda pissed so..

These pinkies (baby mice) are food for the snakes in wards.
We humanely euth them with CO2 first before feeding them.

My legs are giving way. Thank goodness its my off day tmrw.
I had a nightmare last night, woke up suddenly and realised it was

2nd day at the Singapore Zoo!

Look what Rentokill (the pest control people) brought in!

It's a Tamandua! Caught in some drain in Bukit Panjang..
They are apparently some subspecies of the Giant Anteater.

Look at him! So chubby, so cute!
They suspect he was one of those illegal pets that got dumped..
Check those giant claws he has.. they function to help them dig for ants to eat!

And, and, and someone brought in a baby sunbeam snake!
He/she shimmers like a rainbow in the sun..
That's him/her snuggled up in my palm, that's how tiny it is :)

Oh, and this is a Fly River Turtle.
The softest skin I've ever felt.. ah it was 6kg!

I feel like a tourist in the Zoo- A tourist with special passes. Haha.
It's probably cos' I already know where I wanna work after graduation..
Now that I have some direction in my future, this Zoo prac is serving

I love elephants! Esp tame ones that can pose for cameras :) Haha..

This a very tame Pangolin called 'Pangolina'.
They don't usually allow people to hold them like this..
She kept wriggling so her face is a blur..

Their defense mechanism is to curl up into a ball..
Similar to porcupines, echidnas, hedgehogs.. just without the spikes.
Very very long and strong tail with claws that can grip onto you.
I suffered two long scratches across my hand today from this one.

And also fed many mosquites today.
The mozzies must think its free B+ buffet today.

10 Brainless/Crazy/Retarded Things I Did This Year..
(In no particular order)

1. Didn't see daylight for 4 days in a row..
(I had to be in school before sunrise and stayed till late. Was in the hospital the entire time so didn't even go out for fresh air/ sunlight.)

2. Shoved an AI probe up a cow's vagina when she wasn't even in heat..
(Yeah I got kicked big time in the thigh. What to do, it was part of the assessment..)

3. Ate an entire watermelon by myself in one sitting..
(I assure you it was a decent sized watermelon. I was emo. )

4. Bought 30 different flavours/brands of Maggie Mee at a go.
(I had had cravings but didn't know which flavour I wanted. I ended up eating it for breakie, lunch and dinner for 3 days in a row. Urghh, it made me feel sick.)

5. Lost my camera (only 2 mths old) & bought the exact same one 1 wk ltr..

6. Bought 10x $10 calling cards at one go.
(I ended up selling them away one by one)

7. Bought a plane ticket to HK then cancelled it 3 days before flying..
($$$!! I was possessed. )

8. Ate a few different brands of dog food..
(I was convinced if dogs could eat them, so could humans. It smells much nicer than it tastes. Trust me. I've tried it.)

9. Cried myself to bed for 2 and a half weeks in a row..
(Don't even ask.. I was very tired at the end of it. Who wouldn't be?)

10. Adopted a cat 2 days after I saw him!
(Yes, the infamous Harvey!)

There you go, even doctors have their silly moments. Nobody said I was a genius.

After baking strawberry cheesecake this morning (I'd be honest and admit
that it looked awful but tasted darn good), I sat in bed all arvo and read my book.
Finally, I finished reading the Twilight saga.
Good series, looking forward to the movie now!

Next, I pondered over my last conversation with a friend. (or ex-friend, should I say).
About how the exchange of words just fell on deaf ears (both ways)..
At that point in time,being consumed in too much rage, it was difficult to think calmly
and rationally. Now that it has been quite a few months, I had time (finally) to sit
down to have a good think. It wasn't the least painful memory alive but it was bearable.

Friends come and go. But a really good friend? Risking it all for an opportunity
we decided upon together, then realising the circumstances were not ideal enough
and having to give it all up (or cast it aside temporarily, whatever you call it)..
Having agreed to stick our heads in mud, but one backs out the moment his/her
hair touched the damp, smelly and grotty mud.
And in an instant, all the memories and laughter shared seemed to vanished- gone.
It almost seems petty, but magnify that 1000x and it became betrayal.

How long does it take to forgive? Or should I say, to forget?
A lifetime may not be enough.
How do you forgive if you are unable to forget. I think more than often,
people don't forget. You don't- No,you can't just forget such things.
(unless you've got early age Alzheimer's.)
Instead, they choose to isolate and bury that part of their memory somewhere
at the backof their heads where it will not be allowed to resurface again.
Either that, or they are just bloody good actors and have the gift of
compartmentalizing their emotions. (or they could be bipolar.)

Above everything stated, losing a friend (that friend) overwhelms my mind and heart
with regret every night before I close my eyes and drift off to sleep. It something I have to live with for awhile, a painful price I have to pay- for my foolishness.

If I could do it all over again, I would do better. But I can't.
Sigh, I could do with a big hug now.
Someone to hold me and tell me everything will be alright.

Seriously, why the hell am I being so emo tonight.
Life is supposed to be good for me, I'm supposed to be feeling merry.
Damn it.

Since I'm on Ophthalmology Rotation now,
(and because I haven't been taking & posting pictures)
I thought this was quite an interesting and relevant picture.

I saw this case in a clinic prac in Singapore.
I diagnosed it as a deep stromal ulcer. (see the huge central crater?)
We attempted conservative but aggressive treatment.
But the eye ruptured a day later and we had to take it out.
Cool eh? :)

It's disgusting to see people living in huge houses who choose the less ideal treatment or worse, refuse treatment for their dogs because of cost. You've had this dog for years.. does it not deserve the best treatment if it has been bringing so many years of joy and happiness to your family, friends, other loved ones and yourself? I know its not cheap, but I'm sure you can afford it. I don't judge people, but really, its just so upsetting to see a dog suffer because the owner does not feel the dog is worth that amount of money.

On the other hand, you get this old couple who lost everything they had in a fire a few weeks back. They lost their house and 2 dogs on the property all in one night. And with the surviving dog, they shower with tender loving care. They bought a new puppy and within hours of purchasing the puppy, the puppy had to be rushed to the emergency centre for a bee sting. Not one moment did they hesitate about the cost of treatment and they did everything the vet told them to.

You see the difference in dedication towards animals? It's just so sad to see, and to know that there is so much you can do for the animal but yet because the owner refuses/ cannot afford to pay that you as a vet have to stop treatment for the animal. Ideally, I would want to give the best treatment to every animal that walks through my consult door. However, in the real world, it is a business, and its so sad for me to admit that I cannot offer treatment if the owner does not pay for it.

It really boils down to the owner, and how the vet is able to convince the owner to continue believing that the animal has a chance and that it deserves treatment. I want to be the kind of vet who can persuade owners to not give up on their dogs and that even a little bit is worth a try.

Just did a 10 hour shift in the emergency centre in school. Surprisingly am not very tired..
The dog who shat on itself sat on me today.. I reek of dog poo now.. The dog has gone to doggie-heaven now. Another sad story to tell...

I think the cop was just surprised at how blunt I was.
Why bother cooking up some story to wriggle my way out of a fine..

All 3 of us fell sick following this pig prac- our teacher too!
This is a bit erm.. scary. Barb (our teacher) doesn't think its Swine Flu..
ZY went to the doc and got prescribed Tamiflu (anti-viral drugs for swine flu),
Nicole hasn't seen the doc but has a raging 38.4 fever, and I, feel slightly feverish
(still refusing to whip out the thermometer) and am coughing my brains out..

SIGH. GET WELL SOON MY FELLOW SICK PEAS..

Can't be the pigs that passed us the flu.. Aussie pigs are very clean.
Maybe its the farm worker who was sick the other day..
It's just abit too coincidental that ALL of us fell sick at the same time..

Perhaps, I should be good and pop some pills.. prophylactically.
Just to keep the fever away, and before I herniate my brain coughing so much.
I have been drinking so much honey + lemon I keep peeing every 2 hours. Ggrrr.

Anaesthesia Rotation- THE END~

Now that I no longer need to spend 10 hours in school daily,
I might start to have a life :)

But, A.W.E.S.O.M.E rotation. You go home feeling bloody exhausted & worn out..
Yet everyday, you learn so so much. Like today, I did dental nerve blocks
on this geriatric cat that worked so well the cat barely felt his tooth extraction!
Other days, I sedate and anaesthetise cats and dogs of all ages and temperament.
Soon, you pick up what cocktail of drugs to use for each individual animal..
And then you twiggle with the drug doses abit here and there and voila!!

You get to practice putting in catheters, ET tubes..
You get to choose what drugs you wanna use and the doses..
Basically you call the shots! Even the clinician becomes 'your assistant'! Haha.
This rotation gave us so much hands-on experience.. I for sure walked away after
2 weeks, knowing that I am one more step closer to becoming a great vet someday~
...

On a side note,
I'm actually missing home now. I can't wait to go home!

Anaesthesia rotation is all about experiments on different animals.
Not in a sadistic or abusive way.. (of course..)
Its how each animal has its own special cocktail of anaesthetic drugs..
Specially picked out with carefully calculated doses of drugs to knock them out.
And then you see how each animal respond to the cocktail you've given..
Real life cases, real drugs.. it does make you feel like a vet already :)
But omg, I'm so tired everyday.... I still need to do some stupid reading and notes..
Still, life is good :)

My left eye has been twitching for 3 days already.
I googled it, and this is what someone said..

"Sometimes twitches are just an indication of a little chemical imbalance in the body such as a lack of electrolytes. Also too much caffeine, stress, or overuse

So, are my body's electrolytes imbalanced..
